PILBARA

7 DAY TOUR

We begin this tour on the edge of the Western Desert, the town is dominated by Mount Newman (1053 meters) and is the largest modern mining town in the east Pilbara.  Within minutes of riding out of town we are exploring true Pilbara country, riding through rich red earth and crossing freshwater streams with a maze of tracks that eventually leads to a natural amphitheatre gorge that will be our overnight camp.  What a backdrop, towering cliffs with some of the most amazing rock formations famous to the Pilbara region.

The Pilbara is famous for the richness and ruggedness of its landscapes and the riding through these landforms is mesmerising.  The hidden swimming holes and running water to wash off a days ride is a stark contrast to the surrounding environment, and a welcome finish to a day.

ITINERARY

DAY 1: NEWMAN – KALGANS

From the gold rush towns of the 1880s to the largest modern mining town in the East Pilbara, Newman is where we start our adventure.

Sitting on the edge of the Western Desert, the town is dominated by Mount Newman (1053 meters) and named after the explorer Aubrey Woodward Newman. In 1957 a huge iron ore deposit was discovered at Mt Whaleback, which is now the site of the largest single open-cut iron ore mine in the world.

We ride out of town and within 10 minutes are exploring true Pilbara country, riding rich red earth and crossing freshwater streams through a maze of tracks that eventually lead to a natural amphitheatre gorge that will be our overnight camp.  What a backdrop, towering cliffs with some of the most amazing rock formation famous to the Pilbara region.  You will have had your appetite wet for adventure with the unbelievable scenery and at times challenging surfaces including red pindan, rocks and water crossings.

DAY 2: KALGANS – TALAWANA TRACK

This morning we head north through station tracks opening and closing gates behind us on route to the Talawana Track.  We are going to ride a variety of surfaces today from overgrown station tracks to graded access roads on route to the Karlamilyi National Park.  It is Western Australia’s largest and most remote national park. Karlamilyi is the Martu Aboriginal word for the Rudall River, and the park encompasses over 1.3 million hectares between the Great Sandy Desert and the Little Sandy Desert. The Department of Parks and Wildlife advises that visitors to Karlamilyi need to be well organised with at least two vehicles and radio or satellite communications. Visitors must be self-sufficient with all supplies and equipment including fuel, water, food, medical supplies, etc. Visitors should not enter the area unless they are confident about navigation and driving in remote locations. We have all of this covered and can’t wait to show you a unique part of Western Australia that only the very few are lucky enough to experience.  We camp under the stars along the Talawana tonight and relive the stories of the days ride around the fire while pondering tomorrows adventure.

DAY 3: TALAWANA TRACK – KARLAMILYI

Leaving the Talawana Track behind the riding becomes more technical, using old rarely driven tracks that traverse the breakaway country with dry creek beds linking the country together and providing evidence of how the wet seasons shape our outback.

As we ride through the Karlamilyi National Park you could be mistaken you are in Nevada with Ruddall Rivers very unique landscapes and mystical feel.  The surface is constantly changing from the rich red Pilbara soil, to quarts encrusted breakaway hills with their creek systems and polished rocks.

Our camp for the night is amongst a tight group of breakaways and the photo opportunities are endless.  We watch the sun slip below the breakaways and settle in around the fire for a gourmet meal and look forward to tomorrows ride to Desert Queen Baths.

DAY 4: RUDDALL – QUEEN BATHS

The riding today starts out with weaving our way across vegetated plains dotted with groves of white gum attracting the odd camel sheltering in the shade.  Then before you realise, we have entered a new world.  The landscape is breakaways as far as the eye can see, with our narrow trail meandering its way through the maze of wash aways and creeks.  We eventually cross the Rudall River, named by early explore Frank Hahn after the surveyor William Frederick Rudall, who he met while searching for men missing from the Calvert Expedition party.  This area is not only some of the most amazing riding we have experienced but is also rich with history.

By the time we reach our destination Desert Queen Baths we are all ready and deserving of a refreshing swim in the natural oasis to freshen up for lunch.

The riding after lunch is different again as we navigate the river bed itself for a short section and then the richly vegetated flood plains adjacent.   This leads us to our next overnight camp with its lush green river gums and backdrop of breakaway country.

DAY 5: RUDDALL – RUNNING WATERS

There is the option of an eighty-kilometre special stage today that loops east and then north again to re-join the main track heading north. This deviation encompasses an old mining settlement and explores very remote tracks and an environment very rarely driven.  The aim today is to make the most of the Karlamilyi National Park before heading west to finish the day swimming in a warm natural spring to sooth the days riding away.  It is a tranquil lush environment, in stark contrast to the absolutely amazingly rugged country we ride through on the track in. This is our camp for the night and provides those who are keen for another warm spa and freshen up in the morning before we head further west.

DAY 6: RUNNING WATERS – SKULL SPRINGS

This has become a way of life that is hard to give up.  Watching the sunrise over outback Western Australia, riding our amazing pieces of equipment through nothing less than the best the Pilbara has to offer, we are the luckiest people on earth.  The lush green trees and warm springs of Running Waters is hard to leave behind, however, the next two days are full of adventure and amazing riding.  The ride to Skull Springs has both open scenic riding and technical components to enjoy .

DAY 7: SKULL SPRINGS-NULLAGINE

We ride a twisting winding route today with plenty of changes in elevation.  The route is bordered by hills and scenery that will have you wanting to deviate and really get amongst the scenery.  We will fossick amongst historic gold mines and their history of machinery and diggings, reliving their “gold fever.” We are riding our last one hundred and fifty kilometers today through true Pilbara country and you will find yourself reminiscing of the past six days and its one thousand kilometers of outback Western Australia. The memories we have made will be with us a lifetime. This is a chance to soak it all in, the amazing and memorable riding, landscapes and great times had along the way.  We hope you will have enjoyed the adventure.

ITINERARY

DAY 1: LAVERTON – LAKE RASON

The outback town of Laverton was once known as the wildest Gold mining town in the west and it is the gateway to our DACA tour adventure.

We leave the town of Laverton and civilisation behind us and within one kilometre you will be immersed amongst the Great Victoria Desert and experiencing some incredible motorbike riding. Before you know it, you are picking and shuffling your way through the maze of disused mine shafts and a rusted history of the once bustling town of Burtville.

DAY 2: LAKE RASON – NEALE JUNCTION

Here you will witness an amazing sunrise over 1600 hectares of shimmering horizon. We skirt the lake on snaking, winding, desert gum lined tracks that never cease to end.

DAY 3: NEALE JUNCTION – PREMIER DOWNS

We say goodbye to our shady camp and hit the Connie-Sue heading south towards the Nullarbor Plain. Here we relax and enjoy some open riding with hard pack, amongst the Great Victorian Desert Dunes. Keep a close eye out for the Camels and the Dingos.

DAY 4: PREMIER DOWNS – RAWLINNA

Our journey begins by crossing the boundaries of Premier Downs onto Seymore Downs Station. On route to the Historical Railway siding, “Rawlinna” on the Trans-Aust Rail line. The vast landscape and remoteness will have you captivated as you pass cattle yards, windmills, and a history of Rusty old Holden’s.

DAY 5: RAWLINNA – NULLABOUR

Leaving the vast savannah station country behind we hit the Nullabour Plain and cross the famous 90mile straight. We are a stones throw from the Great Australian Bight and its spectacular cliffs.

DAY 6: NULLABOUR – PLAINBULBUNYA

Today is the day our skills will be tested on the infamous Telegraph Track that follows the cliffs of the Great Australian Bight west. The track has kilometres of rusty communication wire hanging from its weathered poles, a testament to the efforts made in the 1870’s, by the linesmen of the day.

These poles also lead us to the remarkable Toolina Cove and its towering cliffs. This place will be hard to leave, and the photos will only capture a small aspect of the sheer magnificence of this place. However, the feelings you experience are indescribable and simply awesome, as you literally stand on the edge of Australia surrounded by your mates and fellow DACA adventurers.

DAY 7: BILBUNYA – CAPE ARID

The biggest dunes in the southern hemisphere and all of Australia, are expecting you. These are an amazing natural feature of the Great Australian Bight coastline. As you spend some time riding amongst these giants, here you will experience how very small and insignificant humans really are in this enormous and infinite universe. It will allow you to appreciate and experience the beauty and limitlessness of Australia’s landscape. Once you’ve soaked up the exhilarating fun, we head west towards Israelite Bay, along the base of the coastal scarp using the tracks that wind their way behind primary dunes, skirting coastal lakes, arriving at the telegraph station ruins at Israelite Bay. We then head north west from Israelite Bay looking towards the untouched beaches of Cape Arid.

Day 8: CAPE ARID

The place where dreams are made, ride some of the most amazing pristine, picturesque beaches in the world. You will want to get your camera focussed and ready to snap away. Here you will also discover hidden natural spa pools and turquoise lagoons amongst the granite headlands and bays. We ride to the base of Mt Arid and if you’re feeling fit, climb to appreciate the 360degrees view of the Recherche archipelago stretching west to Esperance. Or adventure to some of the very isolated bays and coves to the south of Cape Arid through some of the most scenic riding on the south coast. Either way you are spoilt for choices and adventure.

As we near the end of an amazing DACA adventure we ride to the iconic Condi Tavern with their never ending generous and friendly hospitality. Here you will have an opportunity to relax and celebrate all you’ve experienced, share your stories, photos and adventures with your mates and the crew you’ve met along the way.

ITINERARY

DAY 1: LAVERTON – LAKE WELLS

The outback town of Laverton was once known as the wildest Gold mining town in the west and today it is the gateway to our DACA tour adventure.

We leave the town of Laverton and civilisation behind us and head north through local station roads, where you will feel the vastness of our big country as you get to know your bike and get your eye in. We will ride through the De La Poer Range with its twisting, winding and washed out tracks leading us to Lake Wells.

DAY 2: LAKE WELLS – YEO HOMESTEAD

Station tracks not accessible to others and barely driven by the pastoralist are the start to the day on our way to the iconic abandoned Yeo Homestead. With a couple of hundred kms of desert trails and tracks under our belt, we will arrive to the welcoming shady verandahs of the abandoned Yeo homestead and wash the day down. Stretched back riding boots still on, we will be all smiles and in awe of the days ride through what can only be called An “Australian Oil Painting” while absorbing the rich history of this restored homestead.

DAY 3: YEO – ANNE BEADELL

We say goodbye to our 1800’s character homestead and ride on down the Anne Beadell with its unique landscapes. The riding is unbelievable, winding and snaking its way between these landscapes familiar of a Nevada Desert, with you wanting to stop and conquer every spectacular hill with its panoramic views. As we head east, deep into Great Victoria Desert country you will get a true sense of remoteness, keep a close eye out for the Camels.

DAY 4: ANNE BEADELL – LAKE RASON

Leaving the Anne Beadell our day begins with more technical riding today, on a very unused track with vegetation brushing your bars as we snake and berm our way through a forest of desert gums and spinifex lined trails for what feels an eternity. We break out of the forest into a totally new environment, sparsley vegetated dunes and ridges with a hardpac track that leads us onto the eighty km long “Lake Rason”. Here we will watch the sun set over the lake and roll swags, before dining like kings.

DAY 5: LAKE RASON – L.A.

A sunrise over the Horizon of the lake is a print to hang on the wall at home, we skirt the lake this morning on more tight twisting tracks with tall gums lining our route. The environment is ever changing and challenging with blue gums becoming a blur before we get to the breakaway country and its rocky washouts. Every rise and fall of elevation you enter a new riding environment and never want it to end. As you ride towards our final destination your memories of the past four days and the incredible riding and great times you have experienced will be with you. As we near Laverton we ride through the ruins and old mining memorabilia of the town Burtville with its abandoned mine shafts and machinery left as a testament to how the early settlers lived and worked in the pursuit of Gold. The final 50kms of Great Victoria Desert is open and a welcome rest from the days exciting riding. This is a chance to soak it all in and reminisce of the 1000 km’s of amazing and memorable riding, landscapes and great times had along the way.

ITINERARY

DAY 1: WILUNA – THREE RIVERS

The outback town of Wiluna was discovered on St Patricks 1896, It was a thriving gold rush town with over 9000 men and women with a bad case of Gold Fever. Today we are a group of riders infected with Desert Fever, anxious of the what we will discover, and what the Desert and it’s unique landscapes will provide for us.

DAY 2: THREE RIVERS – MT AUGUSTUS

Today we ride to “Burringurrah” the largest rock in the world, twice the size of Ularu. Mt Augustus rises 715m above the surrounding desert landscape with its rocky creeks, gorges and Aboriginal rock engravings. You will see Burringurrah on the horizon well before we reach it, where we call camp for the night.

DAY 3: MT AUGUSTUS – KENNEDY RANGES

We say goodbye to MT Augustus and ride through a maze of station tracks that twist and wind their way through red pindan trails. The never ending changing terrain makes our W.A. outback a riders dream, not to mention the mesmerising landscapes we encounter throughout the day. Mt Augustus is within the traditional lands of three tribal groups: Maia to the west, the Malgaru to the east and the Ingarrda to the south, who call the ranges Mandatharra. We finish our day at the base of the Kennedy Ranges with their 100m high walls as our backdrop. There are some spectacular walk trails for the fit with the most amazing panoramic outback views.

DAY 4: KENNEDY RANGES – ROCKY POOL

We ride south today to cross the mighty Gascoyne River, following its meandering course along snaking station tracks crossing tributary creeks and passing station mills. The eastern face of the Kennedy Ranges reveales its size of 75km long and 25km wide as we ride west now towards our overnight camp.

DAY 5: ROCKY POOL – CARNARVON

Today we continue to follow the Gascoyne River to where it meets the Indian Ocean. The riding is everything you came to see and experience, with tight twisting trails and open and expansive tracks all with views of breakaway ranges and desert gum lined creeks. We finish the day on the ocean with a well deserved dip where we celebrate an epic five days of un-believable desert riding and good times.
